Bark n Fetch store owner Heather Denton knows her dog food. Denton said knowing about the quality of the food and nutritional facts about the food her store sells is what sets it apart from other pet stores.

“You can go into any store and have a lot of people working and have a lot of stuff,” Denton said. “But if you don’t know enough about nutrition and don’t care enough about the health of the dog and the quality of the food you are selling, it’s going to come through.”

Denton wanted to give pet owners a store that could provide information that they wouldn’t get at big box stores.

The background

When one of Denton’s golden retrievers developed allergies, she started researching pet food and learned that many times, dog allergies are related to their food. She found a new type of food she wanted to try but there was only one store in the area that sold it, a boutique-style store in Dallas. Denton visited and said she fell in love with the store, she said.

A short time later, one of Denton’s friends introduced her to the owner, who gave Denton advice. Eventually, Denton opened Bark n Fetch in May 2022.

“It was four years of us talking and meeting with her just to really understand what it took to open up a business,” Denton said. “Especially in the pet industry because there is so much.”

What’s special about it

Denton said pet owners can come in to talk about nutrition, and she and her staff will give them as much information as they can. If Denton or her staff don’t have the answer, they have resources that can be used to find the answer.

“I truly want to help people and their pets,” Denton said. “There is so much misinformation about pet food and what is in it.”

To ensure Bark n Fetch has the best quality dog food, Denton and her staff research products so that pet owners know they are leaving with items that are good for their pet.

In addition to food, Bark n Fetch also sells treats, toys, bowls, beds and has a self-serve dog wash area.

Quote of note

“I want people to feel great when they come in,” Denton said. “I want them to feel great when they leave.”
